Once you have decided that you are going to participate in a marathon, then there are some things that you need to do to prepare for it. Of course, there is the getting in shape, but also what is important is planning for the clothes that you are going to wear. If you want every chance possible to finish your chosen marathon, then you need to be dressed for it.
You are going to want a good quality pair of running shoes. Don’t go for style here but put the focus on fit and comfort. Also, don’t wait for a day or two before the race to choose your runners. You need time to break these in and feel totally comfortable in them. It is recommended that the shoes be bought a few months before the first race and that they are used for practice. Those that make the mistake of buying new shoes a day or two before the event so that they can look good could pay the price by way of the disappointment of not being able to finish. As a result of the shoes hurting the feet.
A lot of runners find that they don’t run in the same clothes for the marathon that they do when they are training. There is a good reason for this. Runners heat up a lot faster in the marathon because of the large group of people that are around them.
The Weather Conditions
It is not easy to plan for the clothes that will be worn for the marathon too far in advance. This is because what is to be worn will depend on the weather on that particular day. The weather forecast can be checked a few days in advance. Then several potential items of clothing can be made ready for the event in the case there is a weather change. When considering the weather, don’t just focus on the temperature. The wind is going to be important as this can reduce the temperature.
- Warm Weather Clothing: Marathons are run at different times of the year. Some are during the hot weather, and the runner has to be prepared for this. The type of clothing, the material it is made of and its weight are all going to be important factors to consider. The hotter it is going to be the least amount of clothing and the lighter it can be is the best choices.
- Cool Weather: Although in the cool weather, the participants still heat up, they have to adjust for the cooler weather. It is better to dress in layers rather than one thick layer. Light attire covered with a light windproof or rainproof jacket may be the ideal choice. This way, the jacket can be removed if necessary.
The Right Fit
As with the choice of shoes, the choice of clothing is important in regards to comfort and fit. Everyone wants to look good, but the day of the marathon is not a good time to be wearing a new outfit. Caution has to be taken that the clothing is not too tight as it will rub the skin. Also not too loose as it will hinder movements.
Wearing as few accessories as possible is a wise decision. Especially dangling earrings for the women or chains or necklaces.
